One of the classic super robots in mecha anime is unarguably that of Getter Robo, and this latest Pose+ offering is genuinely excellent.
This particular version of Getter 1 is from the initial parts of Getter Robo Armageddon, the anime adaptation of Ken Ishikawa’s and Go Nagai’s popular manga.
The anime version had a somewhat troubled production history starting off with the master of pathos Yasuhiro Imagawa, of Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Giant Robo fame. Only to be replaced as director a few episodes later by Jun Kawagoe.
Over the years, I’ve reviewed various toys of Shin Getter 1, such as the Metal Build Shin Getter 1 and Riobot Shin Getter 1, but this is my first review of the original Getter 1, as featured in Getter Robo Armageddon.
For all intents and purposes this version of Getter 1 is very similar to the one from the original manga and anime from the 70s. In that, it can fire its Getter Beam from the belly and wield twin Getter Tomahawks. Not to mention having the epic yellow nappies from the waist down.
Previously, I have owned both iterations of Getter 1 as designed by T-Rex for Sentinel. Those were bother excellent toys, but this new Pose+ version is rather special.
The Pose+ brand is also fairly new and developed by Awaken Studio. I’ve picked up their Baldios a while back and was hugely impressed, and this new Getter 1 toy similarly does not disappoint.
However, unlike in the anime, the ability of Getter 1 to change into its other modes, Getter 2 and Getter 3, is not handled here; those are separate and will be forthcoming toy releases.
Instead, the focus is on making this the best version of Getter 1 to date, and in that regard, it certainly succeeds.
As the name of the toy line suggests, the focus on Pose+ releases is their articulation and what I would term “playability.” Yes, they are meant for mecha toy collectors, so fidelity to the host design is clearly key, but these are very much toys that are meant to be played with.
The result is something that, while large and chunky, isn’t overly heavy. It also has a wide range of motion and lovely ratcheted joints.
The latter makes a very satisfying click as they pop into place, and as a result, they hold whatever poses you want very well.
In addition to two Getter Tomahawks and an array of complex effect parts for the Getter Beam, you also get two versions of the Getter Wing. This being the iconic anti-gravity red cloak that flaps around in the anime.
The two iterations here are the smaller version and the much larger wrap-around option. Both have wires in them to facilitate various ostentatious display options.
You also get the two massive Getter Machine Guns (shown above), with detachable ammo drums and pivotable shoulder rests so they can be held properly.
In short, this is probably the definitive version of Getter 1, and it maintains the high standard I’ve seen in prior Pose+ releases.
This Pose+ Getter 1 is also surprisingly affordable for a toy of this size and complexity, costing 27,500 yen (or around $178). You can also pick up this toy from either HobbyLink Japan or AmiAmi.
So, if you are a big fan of Getter Robo and enjoy its presence in Getter Robo Armageddon, then you should definitely pick this up.
